If you’re into epic Pagan Metal, Moonsorrow’s Kivenkantaja is an absolute must-listen. I first discovered the band through a compilation and was immediately hooked, eventually working my way through their entire discography. Every album has its strengths, but today I want to highlight Kivenkantaja, which I’ve recently revisited.
Released in 2003, Kivenkantaja features six sprawling tracks that blend Scandinavian folklore and Viking mythology with the band’s signature sound. The album is a perfect mix of epic melodies and crushing heaviness, featuring a wide array of traditional instruments like 12-string guitars, jaw harps, and violins. This rich instrumental diversity creates a vast sonic landscape that feels both ancient and powerful.
What sets Moonsorrow apart is their ability to combine soaring, melodic elements with the raw aggression of extreme metal. The vocals range from clean, chant-like passages to harsh, extreme vocals, with every band member contributing to the vocal work. The result is a layered, immersive experience that pulls you deeper into their storytelling.
Founded in 1995 in Helsinki, Finland, Moonsorrow sings exclusively in Finnish, which adds an authentic touch to their folklore-infused lyrics.
If you haven’t listened to Kivenkantaja yet, now’s the time. It’s epic, melodic, and intense—a true gem in the world of Pagan Metal.
