Früher habe ich ohne großes Konzept drauflos geschrieben. Ich habe Riffs zusammengeschoben und so lange hin und her gerückt, bis der Song irgendwie funktioniert hat. Am Ende kam meistens etwas Gutes dabei heraus – aber der Weg dorthin konnte ziemlich anstrengend sein.
Heute gehe ich strukturierter vor. Ich entwickle Variationen aus einem Riff, baue eine Songstruktur und schaue, welche Parts der Song tatsächlich braucht.
Und dabei habe ich etwas Wichtiges gelernt:
Nicht jedes gute Riff gehört in den Song.
Manchmal fliegt ein Riff raus, wenn es den Flow bremst. Auch wenn das schwerfällt. Vielleicht findet es seinen Platz in einem anderen Song – oder wird durch weitere Variationen sogar zum Ausgangspunkt für etwas völlig Neues.
Manchmal ist weniger einfach mehr.
I used to write without much of a concept. I would throw riffs together and keep moving things around until somehow the song worked. In the end, something good usually came out of it – but the process could be pretty exhausting.
Today I try to work more structurally. I develop variations of a riff, build a song structure and look at what the individual parts actually need.
And I’ve learned something important:
Not every good riff belongs in the song.
Sometimes I let a riff go if it kills the flow. Even if that hurts. I might find a place for it in another song – or it might become the starting point for something completely different.
Sometimes less is simply more.
