Ich mag viele Filme aus den 80ern. Oft sind sie gerade einmal 90 bis 110 Minuten lang – und trotzdem bleibt unglaublich viel hängen.
Beim Songwriting sehe ich das inzwischen ähnlich.
Nach dem ersten Entwurf geht es für mich nicht nur darum, was ich noch in einen Song packen kann. Sondern vor allem darum, was wirklich bleiben muss.
Ein weiteres Riff, eine Wiederholung oder ein zusätzlicher Part macht einen Song nicht automatisch besser. Manchmal zieht es ihn einfach nur unnötig in die Länge.
Für mich gehört deshalb zum Songwriting genauso das Weglassen wie das Schreiben.
Ein Song sollte nicht so lang sein, wie man ihn machen kann – sondern so lang, wie er sein muss.
I love many movies from the 80s. A lot of them are only 90 to 110 minutes long – yet they still leave a lot behind.
I’ve started to see songwriting in a similar way.
After the first draft, it’s not just about what else I can put into a song. It’s about what really needs to stay.
Another riff, another repetition or another section doesn’t automatically make a song better. Sometimes it just makes it longer.
For me, songwriting is as much about leaving things out as it is about writing them.
A song shouldn’t be as long as you can make it – but as long as it needs to be.
