Musically Shaping Albums (Pete) Carcass – Symphony of sickness (1989)

Discovering Carcass’s debut album „Symphonies of Sickness“ in the late ’80s was nothing short of a revelation. Back then, I had never encountered anything quite like it. The aggressive, dual-vocal assault coupled with the intense, relentless instrumentation drew me in immediately.
After hearing snippets on a sampler, I hastily gathered enough money and rushed to the record store. From the moment I played it, I was captivated. The lyrics were unbelievably twisted—so much so that with my limited English skills, I resorted to translating and painstakingly copying them from my Langenscheidt dictionary. I had never encountered such macabre and sickeningly graphic themes, perfectly matching my affinity for horror films.
The music itself was a revelation. Carcass blended ferocious guitar riffs with chaotic drumming, creating an atmosphere that was both brutal and strangely captivating.
Overall, „Symphonies of Sickness“ remains a cornerstone of extreme metal, pushing boundaries with its graphic imagery and uncompromising sound. It was not just an album but an experience that solidified Carcass as pioneers in the death metal genre.
Have you listened to „Symphonies of Sickness“? What are your thoughts on this seminal album?
