Released in 1988, during the peak of Thrash Metal, „South of Heaven“ by Slayer marks a significant evolution in the genre. During this period, many bands were becoming more technical and slowing down their tempos, often to the dismay of their fans. However, I appreciated the added heaviness that this approach brought to the music. Producer Rick Rubin seemed to share this sentiment, recognizing that after the relentless speed of „Reign in Blood,“ there was no room for further escalation in terms of pace.
What emerged was an album that, in my opinion, features some of the most iconic riffs in Slayer’s discography. The title track, „South of Heaven,“ stands out as perhaps the most impressive Thrash Metal piece ever crafted. This record has left a significant mark on my guitar work, influencing my style profoundly.
