The Art of Destruction – A Film About Destruction

Even though Destruction are considered one of the first metal bands from the German-speaking scene, I’ve only followed their career partially. The film “The Art of Destruction” focuses on the band’s story during the pandemic years and the departure of Mike, offering some behind-the-scenes glimpses. I especially liked Mike’s distinctive guitar playing and his calm, likeable personality. Narratively, the documentary stays somewhat on the surface — I would have loved to see more rehearsal or studio footage, the kind of moments that show the creative core of the band. Unfortunately, the physical release is only available on DVD. I’m not sure if the film will win over new listeners, but for long-time fans it’s definitely worth watching.

Auch wenn Destruction als eine der ersten Metal-Bands aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum gelten, habe ich ihre Karriere nur teilweise verfolgt. Der Film “The Art of Destruction” beleuchtet die Bandgeschichte rund um die Corona-Zeit und den Ausstieg von Mike – und zeigt Einblicke hinter die Kulissen. Ich mochte besonders Mikes markantes Gitarrenspiel und dessen ruhige sympathische Art. Erzählerisch bleibt die Doku jedoch etwas an der Oberfläche. Ich hätte mir mehr Szenen aus dem Proberaum oder Studio gewünscht – also das, was den kreativen Kern der Band ausmacht. Das physische Release gibt’s leider nur auf DVD. Ob der Film auch neue Hörer abholt, bezweifle ich etwas – für langjährige Fans ist er aber definitiv sehenswert.
