Enslaved – RIITIIR (2012, Nuclear Blast Records)
With RIITIIR, Enslaved continue their journey from their 90s Black Metal roots toward a unique and progressive sound. The album title is derived from a Norse-inspired version of “Rites” and refers to human rituals and traditions.
I discovered the band by chance through a US reaction channel and followed their evolution from raw Black Metal to increasingly complex structures. On this record, harsh screams meet clean, often two-part vocals, combined with atmospheric and progressive elements.
RIITIIR blends heaviness and melody into an unconventional but coherent mix. The band moves confidently between different worlds and was already on a strong path toward their current identity. Not an easy listen, but a rewarding one for fans of extreme and sophisticated metal.

Mit RIITIIR zeigen Enslaved einmal mehr ihren Wandel von den Black-Metal-Wurzeln der 90er hin zu einem eigenständigen, progressiven Sound. Der Albumtitel leitet sich aus einer nordisch geprägten Schreibweise von „Rites“ ab und verweist auf menschliche Rituale und Traditionen.
Aufmerksam wurde ich durch Zufall über einen US-Reaction-Channel und habe daraufhin den Werdegang der Band verfolgt – von rohem Black Metal bis zu immer komplexeren Strukturen. Auf diesem Album treffen Kreischgesang und klarer, teils zweistimmiger Gesang aufeinander, ergänzt durch atmosphärische und progressive Elemente.
RIITIIR verbindet Härte und Melodik zu einer ungewöhnlichen, aber stimmigen Mischung. Die Band bewegt sich hier souverän zwischen den Welten und war bereits auf einem sehr guten Weg zu ihrer heutigen Identität. Kein leichtes Album, aber ein spannendes und lohnendes Hörerlebnis für Fans von extremem und anspruchsvollem Metal.
