I’ve been wondering more and more about the future of CDs and vinyl, even for established bands. For the really big acts, vinyl in special colors, limited editions, and deluxe box sets still seems to be a strong source of income. These releases often sell in huge numbers.
But for bands one level below, things already look quite different. I’ve experienced several times now that at release day there was neither vinyl nor CD available – the album was only released digitally and via streaming.
One of my favorite bands is releasing a new album in a few days. It’s heavily promoted on Spotify, but so far there’s no physical release announced.
I’ll admit it: I mostly stream too. But when it comes to my favorite albums, I still love having the CD on my shelf.
I’m curious to see how this development will continue…
Streaming first – und was bleibt vom Album zum Anfassen?
Ich frage mich immer öfter, welche Zukunft CDs und Vinyl bei etablierten Bands noch haben. Bei den ganz großen Acts scheint vor allem Vinyl – mit Special Colors, limitierten Boxen und Extras – weiterhin eine starke Einnahmequelle zu sein. Diese Editionen verkaufen sich oft in Massen.
Bei Bands „eine Stufe darunter“ sieht das aber schon anders aus. Ich habe es inzwischen mehrfach erlebt, dass zum Release weder CD noch Vinyl verfügbar waren – das Album gab es ausschließlich digital und im Stream.
Eine meiner aktuellen Lieblingsbands bringt in wenigen Tagen ein neues Album raus. Auf Spotify wird es groß beworben, aber bislang ist kein physisches Release angekündigt.
Ich gebe zu: Ich streame auch meistens. Aber meine absoluten Lieblingsalben stelle ich mir trotzdem gerne als CD ins Regal.
Ich bin gespannt, wie sich diese Entwicklung weiter fortsetzt…
