Don’t get me wrong – I love vinyl and grew up with cassettes and records. But when the CD emerged, it quickly became my go-to format: compact, portable, durable, and with great sound quality.
Yet in recent years, the CD has been pushed aside by the mainstream market. While vinyl has turned into a collector’s item with countless color variants, deluxe box sets, and inflated prices, CDs often seem to be treated without care. I keep noticing:
-Lyrics printed so small they’re almost unreadable.
-Color choices that don’t work on the small format.
-Small bands releasing CDs in limited quantities – but only as burned copies, without informing buyers.
-Vinyl editions coming with thick lyric booklets, while the CD version doesn’t include the lyrics at all.
With vinyl prices skyrocketing and turning into more of a gimmick than a music format, CDs – which are cheaper to produce – could actually make a comeback. But only if they’re given the respect they deserve.
What do you think? Does the CD still matter to you, or is it a thing of the past?
