Anathema, alongside Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, were pioneers of British doom-death metal, always standing out through their evolution and experimental spirit. Alternative 4 (1998) marked their shift away from heavy doom metal towards melancholic, guitar-driven rock infused with elements of post-rock, gothic, and indie.
I love all Anathema albums – they are the soundtrack of my life. Alternative 4 stands out in particular: its dark atmosphere, delicate melodies, and introspective lyrics make it an emotionally profound work. Songs like “Fragile Dreams” and “Lost Control” perfectly showcase the band’s ability to build tension gradually and increase intensity.
What always defined Anathema was their unpredictability – every release was a surprise, yet never a disappointment. Alternative 4 blends experimentation with emotional honesty, paving the way for the band’s transformation. It’s a shame they have since disbanded, but their legacy lives on – especially in albums like this, which still resonate deeply.
A milestone and a must-listen for fans of melancholic music.
